French for “Orchestra Seats,” Avenu Montaigne offers an outsider’s perspective on an insular world (the original title is Fauteuils d’Orchestre). After bidding adieu to her grandmother (Suzanne Flon in her final performance), sunny Jessica (Cecile De France, L’Auberge Espagnole) moves from Macon to Paris. Upon securing a job as a waitress in a popular cafe, she meets high-strung soap star Catherine (Valerie Lemercier), burnt-out pianist Jean-FranCois (Albert Dupontel), and secretive art collector Jacqus (Claude Brasseur), who comes equipped with a pretty girlfriend and a handsome son (Christopher Thompson). Though the tousled Jessica has little in common with these posh Parisians, she affects each of their lives in ways both big and small. Directed by Daniele Thompson (La Buche) and co-written with her son, Christopher, Avenu Montaigne serves as the flipside to French phenomenon When the Cat’s Away, in which a young woman meets the people in her neighborhood while searching for an errant feline. In this case, the surroundings are more upscale, but the residents are just as susceptible to fear and insecurity. Though the idea of a sympathetic look at the upper class will surely strike some as off-putting, Thompson makes it work. The genuine affection she feels for her characters–privileged and underprivileged alike–and the grace with which she keeps several plot strands going at once proves that the spirit of Robert Altman lives on in the most unlikely of places. –Kathleen C. A genteel Northerner during the Civil War (Barry Brown) is robbed by scalawag Jeff Bridges–and winds up teaming up with him. Together, they become a criminal duo (although with one member more reluctant than the other) in this entertaining, realistic tale of what the West was really like. Bridges has a gangly, easy-going demeanor, as well as a sense of playfulness that even extends to moments of extreme jeopardy. He makes an interesting team with the stiff, proper Brown, creating comedy seemingly out of thin air. Film directing debut of Robert Benton, who had cowritten Bonnie and Clyde, and who would go on to win an Oscar for Kramer vs. Kramer. –Marshall Fine

Some Girl is the frustratingly beautiful story of a group of emotionally unstable friends trying to have healthy relationships in L.A. in the 90’s if at all possible. Maybe being twenty-something, attractive and single in L.A. isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The films of Hal Hartley, New York’s modern beatnik cinema laureate, are not for everyone. His self-consciously clever ping-pong dialogu sounds like a cross between song lyrics and Samul Beckett, while his deadpan direction gives a wry cast to it all. It’s romantic comedy skewed through a thoroughly modern perspective, and it sprung fully formed in his debut feature. Gloomy redheaded pixie Adrienne Shelly, a neurotic high school student fixated on doomsday scenarios, falls for the tall, dark, and mysterious Robert Burke, a black-clad, philosophy-spouting mechanic who is constantly mistaken for a priest and rumored to be a convicted murderer.
An enigmatic, intellectually playful farce played with ironic understatement, Hartley’s austere film was shot on the cheap with a handsome, restrained style and directed with an approach straddling verbal slapstick and modernist irony. Shelly mixes the goofy, obsessive distractions of a screwball heroine with smarts, determination, and hardball negotiating skills, while Burke’s quiet calm and confidence radiates warmth and sincerity even while playing the loner. Hartley explores the line between truth and rumor, and he takes satirical swipes at the culture of cash and contracts–yet for all his irony he remains an optimist.
